Islamic Funerals

To most cultures and religions, all life is precious. When a friend or loved one dies, those who remain behind seek the best and most appropriate way to remember and honor them. Different religions and cultures go about this in varying manners.

At American Heritage Cemetery & Funeral Home Crematory, we are committed to providing care of the highest quality. To honor those who have passed, we conduct funeral services for numerous religions and cultures – Islamic funerals included. During this difficult time, allow us to help support you, plan the most appropriate funeral possible, and celebrate your loved one for their unique individuality.

About Islamic Funerals

It is considered a community event, an Islamic funeral. Additionally, it is believed by Muslims that this is an exceptionally spiritual occasion. Those attending engage in group prayers. These prayers by mourners ask Allah to have mercy on all deceased Muslims as well as the recently departed loved one.

The ritual before burial (which is done as soon as possible) involves body bathing and shrouding. Usually within 24 hours of death, the body is buried. This is to discourage unsanitary issues for the protection of the living. An exception, however, occurs if foul play is suspected or the person was killed in battle. In those cases, before burial, the cause of death must be determined. It is not acceptable – according to Islam tradition – to perform cremation.

The Islamic burial rituals consist of the following aspects:

  • Except in extraordinary circumstances, the body is collected and bathed (washing of the body can vary between practices)
  • In white linen cloth or white cotton, the body is enshrouded (this is done to respect the privacy and dignity of the departed)
  • A funeral prayer is recited
  • In a grave, the body of the departed is buried
  • Traditionally, when the body of a departed Muslim was buried, it was positioned so that the head faced in the direction of Makkah Al-Mukarramah or Mecca.

Women were traditionally discouraged from funeral procession participation in Middle Eastern Muslim cultures. Today, however, with times changing, the presence of women is routinely allowed in America.

How American Heritage Cemetery & Funeral Home Crematory Can Assist in Islamic Funerals

Our staff is completely knowledgeable as to the aspects of Islamic funerals. We will conduct appropriate and traditional services if requested by the remaining family, or if specified by the departed.

Should you choose, however, we can stray from tradition and provide any type of service or theme you desire. The manner in which friends and family say goodbye to a loved one makes all the difference in how they heal and recover from their loss. We understand this and make every effort to offer a planning stage that is as painless as possible. When it comes to the ceremony and burial, we will make sure that it runs smoothly and efficiently.

It is very nearly unfathomable to imagine the death of a child. Sadly, however, parents experience infant death all over the world. American Heritage Cemetery and Funeral Home Crematory provides, at no cost to the family, infant services. This includes cremation services, burial property, and a funeral ceremony.
