Shirley Anne Addy

Shirley Anne Baerg Addy, 92, of Gardendale, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home on May 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 1, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, Shirley was the daughter of John F. Baerg and Doris Dalle. She married the love of her life, James Loren Addy, on May 24, 1952, in Odessa, Texas, beginning a beautiful marriage that became the foundation of a life filled with devotion, laughter, and adventure. Before dedicating herself fully to education, Shirley worked at The Model Shop in downtown Odessa, an upscale clothing store, where she served as the owner's personal secretary. Her love for style, creativity, and craftsmanship stayed with her throughout her life. Shirley was known by many titles throughout her life - teacher, mentor, traveler, mother, grandmother, competitor, and friend - but above all, she was known for the love she gave so freely to those around her. Teaching was not simply her profession, it was who she was. For more than thirty-seven years, she taught Home Economics in ECISD, first at Bonham Junior High and later at Permian High School, where generations of students learned not only cooking and sewing, but also confidence, creativity, and life skills. Even beyond the classroom, Shirley continued sharing her talents by teaching sewing and cooking through Inter Faith Service Council and Odessa College, and later, during retirement, teaching fabric painting at the Ector County Senior Center. Shirley lived life with energy and enthusiasm. She loved dancing, camping, fishing, tennis, and traveling to new places. Whether it was a family camping trip, a cruise, or an adventure with her daughters, Shirley embraced every experience with curiosity and joy. Competitive on the tennis court and adventurous in spirit, she never stopped exploring the world around her. Family meant everything to Shirley. She devoted herself to caring for her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her grandchildren's friends affectionately called her "Super Grandma," a name that perfectly captured her warmth, strength, and larger-than-life presence. Shirley was honest and opinionated in the best possible way - you never had to wonder what she was thinking because you could see it plainly in her eyes. Above all else, Shirley deeply loved her husband, James. Their love story was one of enduring affection and unwavering devotion. She adored holding his hand, flirting with him, and making sure everyone knew he alone held her heart. Her eyes were only ever for her beloved. Shirley is survived by her loving husband, James; her three daughters, Linda Ireland, Elaine Trout (Rev. Dr. Stephen Trout), and Veda Garza; her six grandchildren, Kelly Ireland, Shannon Ireland (Jor-El Martin), Stephanie Thien (Ret. Col. John G. Thien), Christopher Trout (Robert Norvell), Kelby Garza (Olivia Garza), and Kace Garza (Katie Garza); and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John F. Baerg and Doris and Louis B Hatfield, her brother, Harold Baerg and her sons-in-law, David Garza and Les Ireland. Shirley's legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched as a teacher, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her fierce love for family, her honesty, and the unwavering devotion she shared with the love of her life. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on June 6, 2026, at Highland United Methodist Church, 1808 N Dixie, Odessa.
