Kathryn Annette Gibson

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Kathryn Gibson, our loving and devoted mother, wife and friend to all whose lives she touched. Kathy, 69, went to be with Jesus, surrounded by her family at 4:09 pm December 15, 2023. Kathy was born to William Truman and Deretha Mae Brooks on July 10, 1954, in Pecos, Texas. She was raised in various towns across West Texas as a small child and settled in Ozona, Texas. She graduated from Ozona High School in May of 1972. This is where she met and formed her lifetime friendship with her two besties, Debbi and Byrl and many others. One week after graduating, she married James Loyd Layman. They were blessed with two children that made their world whole. Even after going their separate ways, their friendship remained throughout the remainder of her life. Kathy was honored to be a Momma to many others throughout her life. Kathy was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role and life as Nana. Nana was in for a new adventure and always cheering them on in anything and everything they did. She would often say this was her life's reward and greatest honor. Kathy worked hard her entire life. Starting at age 9 she would babysit, clean houses, iron and other tough jobs. She enjoyed being a waitress in her early adult years. It allowed her to meet and visit with lots of different people every day. She went to work for the State of Texas in various roles within Health & Human Services, Driver's License and Parks and Wildlife before retiring in 2014. Even in retirement, she wanted to continue to give back. She became a cafeteria lady at Greenwood Elementary where she was affectionately known as Nana to all the children that came through. They could always count on a word of encouragement and a heartfelt hug too. She married Gary Gibson, (along with his babies) October 3, 1997, in Midland, Texas. They were married for 26 years. She had a vivacious personality and was loved by all who met her. She made friends everywhere she went. Kathy loved to dance. So much, she was a professional dance instructor for a time. She taught many kids to dance on her feet and with her as well. She was a rock and a warrior. She was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2012. She faced the illness bravely and without fear. She was cured and proudly rang the bell at MD Anderson in 2018. She was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in June 2023. She endured so much in the next six months. She exceeded every expectation doctors, therapists and others set out for her. She continued with such determination and grace. She was a true model of selflessness and faithfulness. Kathy leaves a legacy we all strive for in our own lives. She will be remembered for her kindness, faith, enormous love, and the greatest smile and laugh that will never leave those that adored her. Kathy is survived by her husband Gary of Midland, Daughters Brandi (Daniel) Price of Lubbock, Amy Gibson of Midland, Sons Cody (Sherry) Layman of Midland, Blake Gibson of Midland, Grandchildren Tanner, Kade, Brooks, Gavin, Kaden, Sydnie, Kaitlyn, Harley and Morgan, Great grandson Arlo, Father of her children and true friends Loyd and Jeneta Layman, Numerous aunts and uncles, cousins, extended and adopted family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, W.T. and Dot Brooks and her only brother, Stephen Brooks, her sweet fur baby Gracie, as well as, many others she has now been reunited with. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life and legacy at Christ Church Anglican, 5501 N Midkiff in Midland on December 21 st at 11:00am. We encourage everyone to wear bright colors and patterns to honor her personality and love for everything bright in this life. Donations in Kathy's honor can be made to Senior Life Midland Meals on Wheels program changing lives for the elderly, disabled and lonely in Midland County.
