Raymond Bernal

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Bernal, 68, of Odessa, Texas, on October 11, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Born on November 27, 1955, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Nicolas and Delores (Martinez) Bernal, Raymond lived a life full of love, generosity, and deep faith, touching the lives of all who knew him. Raymond was the epitome of a devoted husband, father, and friend. On April 12, 1990, he married the love of his life, Anna Marie (Mendez) Bernal, in Odessa, Texas. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to true partnership. Raymond tended to his wife's every need, waking up every morning to make her breakfast and always kissing her goodbye, cherishing every moment they spent together. His unwavering love and devotion to Anna was an inspiration to many. Raymond was a man of deep compassion and loyalty, always ready to give of himself and his resources so that he could bless others. His kindness was known by all, as was his humility. Those who had the privilege of knowing him described him as hardworking, intelligent, and eloquent-truly a "walking Webster," as he was affectionately called for his mastery of language. His love for reading, particularly the Bible, was immense, and he carried that knowledge with a quiet grace. A graduate with a double major in English and History, and a masters in Political Science, Raymond was not only a gifted speaker but also a talented writer. He excelled in school and pursued his love for learning throughout his life. He shared his wisdom and knowledge with those around him, becoming a father figure to many who needed guidance, love, and understanding. Raymond's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He deeply loved God and was a devoted member of Antioch Christian Church in Odessa. His faith influenced every aspect of his life, from the way he loved his family to how he treated those around him. Raymond's love for his family was boundless. He was a proud father of five sons: Jeremy Mendez, Joseph Derek Bernal, Raymond Bernal Jr. (Terra), Jacob Rene Bernal (Preston H. Hicks), and Andrew Isaiah Bernal (Amanda), all of whom he loved deeply. His four grandchildren-Stella Claire Mendez, Maverick Bernal, August Castiel Bernal, and Archer Joei Bernal-brought him endless joy. His heart was especially warmed by the anticipation of his grandchild on the way, Amora Joi Bernal. Awaiting him in heaven was his beloved granddaughter, Alice Josi Bernal, who was the very first to greet her Papi as he stepped into eternal rest. Raymond is also reunited with his parents, Nicolas and Delores (Martinez) Bernal, who preceded him in death. Raymond was also a protector and provider, not only to his family but to his loyal companion, his beloved German Shepherd, Sniper Bernal, who watched over the home with love and vigilance. Sniper, along with his family, was always by his side, providing comfort and companionship. In the words of those who knew him, Raymond was loving, loyal, kind, and selfless, a man who lived to serve others. His life was a reflection of Christ's love, and his legacy of generosity and faith will continue to inspire those he left behind. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 beginning at 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at American Heritage Funeral Home. A celebration of Raymond's life will be held at American Heritage Funeral Home on October 17, 2024 at 10:00 AM; interment immediately following in American Heritage Cemetery. Raymond Bernal was a pillar of strength, love, and faith. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
