Lona Sharon Carter

On September 14 th , 2024 Lona Sharon Carter (Jackson) gained her angel wings. Some knew her as Lona but those who loved her knew her as MawMaw! Lona was born on May 8 th , 1950 in Danville, VA to Hazel and Lloyd Jackson. Lona grew up on Bishop Ave in Danville with her 3 brothers, 2 sisters, best friend and cousin Sharion Jones. She also spent a lot of time with her grandma, Mrs. Murdock. Lona moved to Iraan, TX where she met Edward Calvert. Together they raised 3 boys- Lee, Edwin, and Bobby. However, on February 2, 1984, she met the love of her life Paul Carter. They made their home in Odessa for over 33 years. During this time Lona worked as the secretary for Lester Humphrey Pest Control and then finished her career out in the Admissions Department of UTPB where she retired in 2023. She loved working at UTPB and helping students with the dreams of going to college. Lona's most prized possessions were her grandkids and great grandkids, they were the apple of her eye. She loved to attend and watch them excel at their sporting events. If you knew Lona well, you know she had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. She also loved to cook, we will miss all of her signature dishes- turkey pot pie, beenie weenies, dressing for Thanksgiving, pies, the list goes on and on. She also loved her social media; she was a hit on TikTok! Lona is survived by her son, Lee Calvert, and his wife, Tracey Calvert; daughter-in-law, Toshia Calvert; grandchildren, Haylee Wilkerson and her husband, Cory Wilkerson, Chase Calvert and his wife, Brianna Calvert, Caleb Calvert, Rachael Calvert, Robert Calvert, David Blackmon, and Savannah Edwards; great-grandchildren, Hayden and Cooper Wilkerson, Charley and Cohen Calvert, Addison Calvert, and Sara Adams; cousin, Sharion Jones; and siblings, brothers Nolan Jackson and Randy Jackson, and sister Darlene Humphries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Carter; sons, Edwin and Bobby Calvert; grandson, Garrett Calvert; stepdaughter, Sherry Adams; brother, Clyde; sister, Jean; and her mom and dad. The family would like to thank the staff at Encompass and Interim Healthcare for the help in her recovery. Also, a special thank you to Steve Spangler, her physical therapist. Most of all, Tina Newton for not only being the counter part to the Thelma and Louise duo, but to the countless hours of staying with her and always being by her side In Lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Humane Society of Odessa in her name or the American Cancer Society (Haylee has information for the local chapter) Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 6-8 PM at American Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 2024, 3:00 PM at American Heritage Funeral Home. Following the service, the family would like to invite you to a reception in Lona's honor at the home of Justin Kirkham and Dee Hill at 405 W. 83 rd . A meal will be provided for those who come.
